Street Grid Lattice
A city street grid re-woven into a diamond lattice and wrapped onto spherical forms, built in Blender.

Overview
Street Grid Lattice takes a real city street network — the grid, in particular, strongly resembles Barcelona's Eixample district, recognisable by its signature diagonal avenue cutting across an otherwise orthogonal block grid — and re-renders it as an interlocking diamond lattice, rotating every street segment onto a 45-degree weave rather than leaving the original grid as-is. Three Blender project files (b1.blend,b2.blend,b3.blend) and five renders, all produced across a single work session on20–24 November 2024, trace that transformation from flat map to a mapped, spherical object.
Concept & approach
The renders progress in two stages. First, the source street data is redrawn entirely in the diamond-lattice weave, in both a stark black-and-white treatment and a softer mint-on-black palette that reads closer to a printed textile than a technical map.

Second, that same flat lattice is projected onto the surface of a sphere, turning the street pattern into a woven, faceted orb — an object rather than a map. Two variants of this spherical mapping survive, one in a harder monochrome and one in a paler, softer grey.

Reflection
The piece reads as a short, focused study rather than an ongoing series: one city grid, one lattice transformation, and one final object (the wrapped sphere) explored in two colour treatments. The "Merlucia" working title doesn't appear anywhere in the source data itself and may not reference the source city directly.
